Conclusion

This is always the rough part when you go to do reviews. There is so many different things that come into play. We loved the system. However just like what we ran into with our Dell Viking, Everything is situated in the front of the cabinet. So if you run Supermicro gear in General. You have to have 2 sets of switches, One for your gear that has IO in the back, and one for your gear that runs IO in the front. Our setup made us have to run both Ethernet ports, and all of the IPMI ports. So we usually run 1 switch for IPMI, 1 switch for public, 1 switch for private traffic. So now we got to run 3 switches front facing, and 3 switches rear facing. This cost adds up greatly. There are ways around this of course.

I also wish they had some sort of integrated switch so you only needed ONE cable for IPMI. This would take away 11 cables from the unit.

Xtreme CPU did like how modular things were. You can replace hard drives, CPUs, memory, network cards. If you wanted to use 10G port, you could simply buy the add-on card from a Supermicro retailer or partner. You have the following cards to pick from.

  • AOC-CTG-i1S (1 x SFP+ and 2 x USB 2.0 ports)
  • AOC-CIBQ-m1 ( 1 x QSFP connect 40gbps and 2 x USB 2.0 Ports)
  • AOC-CIBF-m1 ( 1 x QSFP connect 56gbps and 2 x USB 2.0 ports)
  • AOC-CGP-i2 ( 2 RJ-45 Ports)

I hope we will see a quad port card show up on the market for this thing soon. Most cloud computing systems like to see at lease 3-4 ports. But with that being said, We still think this thing is a step in the right direction. With servers getting smaller and smaller, and more energy efficient. This thing is right up our alley.
