Supermicro 2U Twin2 6026TT-HIBQRF

10 Overall Score

Anyone that builds their own servers knows that Supermicro products are the top-shelf gear of the server world. Our first of a Supermicro server was the Small Office / Home Office (SOHO) X8SIL, which really set the bar high in regards to build quality, features, and reliability. Today we tackle one of Supermicro’s high-end, high-density Twin^2 (that’s Twin SQUARED for the lay people out there) rack systems.

The Supermicro 6026TT-HIBQRF is part of Supermicro’s 2U Twin2 line, and as such is targeted as the small to medium size business that needs high powered servers in minimal rack space. The 6026TT-HIBQRF offers 4 dual socket servers, or more commonly called nodes, inside of 2U of rackspace. Anybody that rents rackspace in a datacenter knows the benefits of high density computing and the advantages to high density rack space computing.

In the server arena there are essentially 4 major factors that determine your costs. The first is hardware costs – this one is pretty obvious, but in some regards you do not always get what you pay for, so you do have to shop wisely. The second consideration is rackspace costs. When you have to buy space in a datacenter you usually have to buy space by a fraction of a rack, which is 40-42 “units” in height. Obviously the more servers you can cram into the space you rent, the better your cost utilization. The third consideration are power costs. It doesn’t do you much good to save $300 a month on rack costs if the servers you deploy are such power hogs that they cost you $600 extra a month in power. And the final cost are bandwidth costs. These are pretty much fixed costs initially, however the costs per GB do go down substantially when you are able to buy “in bulk”.
