Redline Reviews: CM Sphere
Is Coolermaster's slick new $50 heatsink's originality enough to measure up to the veteran competition? What good can the Vortex fan really do?

Very nice review!
Thank you for actually using the two top performing competitors in the comparison rather than just whatever random HSF came to mind like certain reviews I've seen. I see the Ultra 120 is still the performance champ though the Sphere came a lot closer than I guessed it would. If I hadn't forsaken air cooling I would definitely give this cooler a consideration.

Gracias. It really is a good cooler. Not the best, but certainly not mediocre.

Pro review, Ninja. We need to get you a UE120 and an Ultima 90 to add to your database. I've got both and if you don't get them before I'm done with my round of testing, I'll send you mine.
What fans did you use on the Tuniq and the Ultra120? Did you use a fan controller on any of the tests or were they running full speed? What are you using to measure your SPLs? 18dB is mega quiet!
Nice tabletop too.

I'd love having those two in the arsenal, even if it is just for testing. My uncle is an enviromental engineer and he has a Extech Decibel meter (decimeter?) that I used to calculate the sound pressure level. I actually have an acoustically padded room in the basement that is used for recording music. I tested there, open case with all the components.
I used a Sunbeam Chromatic Windmill fan controller to adjust the fan speed, ranging from low at 1700 to max speed.
@Aris
No problem. I'm finishing up the Aquagate S1 review and will have the results posted either tonight or tomorrow and the stuff ready to ship soon.

Know what's funny? That's revision two of the graphs. I screwed up the first set... *mou* I'll definitely fix that.
What else is funny is that Newegg doesn't have it yet. It was released just last month, but neither the 'egg nor FrozenCPU have it yet. As a matter of fact I can't find it listed anywhere on Google except in Euros.

Pretty sure using any other cooler is better than the stock, but the CM did a lot better than I expected it to. The fan is interesting, I've never seen one designed like that.
Good review, very thorough. Only thing I would suggest is that while you compared the size to the stock cooler, I would have liked to see it next to the other coolers you compared it to.
