Weekly Poll : Why would you prefer Linux over Windows?
Ok, there was a brief discussion on this in SB but I still want to know everyone's opinion.
Whats the thing that makes you use Linux ?
I do not use it, and would dearly like a reason to use it

I don't know.
I'll be trying Ubuntu soon, so I'll know.

Open Source, More Secure (both hypothetically and practically: it's uh, open source with shorter development cycles and in real world tests it's harder to crack) , Shorter Development Cycles (most of the new features of Vista were out in Linux years earlier), better Development Platform (it's much easier to write code to use a prototype device on Linux than Windows according to my people that do that sort of thing).
The UIs of the various distros could really use more and better wizards for basic activities though. And walk-throughs have this problem of assuming the reader has a level of knowledge that would preclude needing a walkthrough xD

I like Linux because it's fast and stable. I find I can often boot at higher overclocks in Linux for whatever reason. I like the visual effects with Compiz Fusion. The Folding At Home client runs much faster under Linux, though with the SMP Affinity Changer in Windows that point is moot. There's a ton of community-maintained software available for it through repositories your distribution can connect to (Synaptic for Debian/Ubuntu, YUM for SuSE, etc.) Also, because it's free.
Windows is by far the better gaming OS, however. I barely got WoW working through WineX/Cedega in Linux, ran slow and unstably. The Linux versions of SuperPi and Geekbench are faster than their Windows counterparts, but they're not allowed for Forum Wars (I maintain it's because the highest scorers don't want to learn Linux, but that's a personal opinion ).
I triple-boot Vista, XP, and Linux. I find I spend more time in Windows at this point, however, because I've been playing Crysis and such.

More secure, free applications, Compiz Fusion (eye candy), uses less resources, no need for anti-virus / firewall, more customization, more control, more frequent updates, etc.
The only real downside is gaming or the lack thereof.
Can windows do THIS?

I use linux for a few reasons.
First, on principle. Open source makes me happy.
Second because it eats less system resources (less important to me now that my computer is halfway decent).
Finally, I find it much easier to program on linux. I generally use VI for my coding needs.
I don't use linux for one reason:
Games.
So yeah. Two hard drives FTW.

Otaku Software
$19.95 and more limited functionality
I'll raise you water and fire rendering

It'd look a lot better if their anti-aliasing smoothed things out more, but still looks better than Windows!
